The Assam Rifles appeared in 1835, as a state army called the ‘Cachar Levy’. With around 750 men, this Force was framed to basically secure British Tea bequests and their settlements against ancestral attacks. Thusly, every one of these Forces were redesigned and renamed as the ‘Wilderness Force’ as their job was expanded to direct of correctional endeavors over the fringes of Assam. This Force essentially contributed in opening the locale to organization and trade and after some time they came to be known as the “right arm of the common and left arm of the military”. In 1870, existing components were converged into three Assam Military Police Battalions, named as Lushai Hills, Lakhimpur and Naga Hills.
The Post-Independence job of the Assam Rifles kept on advancing extending from ordinary battle job amid Sino-India War 1962, working in outside land as a major aspect of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) to Sri Lanka in 1987 (Op Pawan) to peacekeeping job in the North-Eastern regions of India notwithstanding developing ancestral distress and revolt wherein the upkeep of lawfulness, countering rebellion and consoling the general population of the locale wound up imperative assignments for the Assam Rifles.
